Classic Secret Santa

Everyone draws a name and buys one gift for that person within the budget. It fits almost any group, and it’s the best choice when you want people to get something they’ll actually use.

White Elephant

Everyone brings one wrapped gift, and nobody knows who it’s for. The fun is in picking and stealing. Gifts are often funny or odd, but they don’t have to be. There’s no draw: it all happens on the day.

  1. Everyone puts their wrapped gift on a table and draws a number for the order.
  2. Person 1 picks a gift and opens it.
  3. Each next person either picks a new gift from the table or steals an opened one.
  4. Whoever gets their gift stolen picks a new one or steals from someone else.
  5. A gift can only be stolen three times. After that it stays put.
  6. At the end, person 1 may swap with anyone once.

Yankee Swap and Dirty Santa

Mostly other names for White Elephant. Yankee Swap is common in New England and tends to mean gifts people actually want. Dirty Santa is the name in parts of the South, sometimes played with dice: roll a certain number and you get to take a gift.
